Cathy completed a Foundation course in Art and Design at the University of Gloucestershire, achieving distinction in 2003, specialising in sculpture. She then completed the BA course in Fine Art – Painting and Drawing, graduating in 2008 focusing on abstract work.
In her other life she is an orthodontist but having taken a year’s sabbatical in 2013 to travel and work around the world with her family she has found more time to pursue a second career as an artist. Much of her recent work has focused on animals from her travels in Africa and her marine series from observing the yacht racing in Cowes where she is lucky enough to live part of the time.
Cathy is a member of the Medical Art Society, exhibits with Kendall’s Fine Art gallery in Cowes and regularly exhibits during Cheltenham Open Studios.
I love painting and drawing, producing both abstract and figurative works. The illusion of depth achieved by layering and the variety of marks expressing movement are great fun to create. My work aims to balance spontaneous and deliberate mark making – to achieve a sense of space and movement – to draw the viewer in.
Principally, I work with oil on canvas, building-up layers to construct the final form. It is a journey with many possible paths, without a predetermined end point. It is a form of story telling – and like a good yarn, each viewer will see something slightly different, depending on the contribution of their own imagination.
