About Cathy
Cathy did a Foundation Course in Art and Design focusing on sculpture followed by a BA in Fine Art Painting and Drawing. Her wildlife series, which she paints in parallel to her more abstract and marine works, stems mainly from her travels in Africa. Cathy has exhibited with Cheltenham Open Studios, undertaken joint exhibitions in the Gardens Gallery Cheltenham and been an artist in residence at the Nature In Art Museum, Gloucestershire.
Her abstracts and wildlife art are available through Saatchi Art Online and she is represented for her marine works by Kendalls Fine Art, Cowes. Her works have been shipped to Iceland, Europe, South Africa, USA and Canada as well as mainland UK.
Cathy divides her time between Cheltenham and Cowes, occasionally learning to sail and completed her first Atlantic crossing in 2023.
“I enjoy moving between abstract and figurative work and use both oils and acrylics. With oil painting I often start with a charcoal or acrylic under-drawing. I may use an airbrush for the base layers and glazes on top to maintain a sense of depth. I love the variety of marks that can express movement and the illusion of depth that layering of paint can produce.
With abstract work my aim is to balance the accidental and deliberate marks in order to achieve a sense of space and movement, drawing the viewer in. The abstract landscapes are non-specific scenes for viewers to interpret as they choose and the seascapes represent the feeling of being on the water rather than accurate reproduction of yachts. Painting is a journey, a great adventure with many different paths and no predetermined end point. The ‘not knowing’ is all part of the fun of being an artist."
